The setting behaviour of elastomer membranes can lead to leaks after repeated SIP sterilisation. GOETZE offers a permanent solution with structural compensation.

Leaks between the valve body and diaphragm are among the well-known challenges in biotechnological plants – especially after multiple sterilisation in the SIP process with saturated steam. The cause is the material-typical settling behaviour of elastomers, known as compression set. Permanent deformation under thermal and mechanical stress can reduce the sealing pressure during operation.


The consequences range from sterility problems and cross-contamination to batch losses. In addition, recurring leaks can impair the validity and existing certifications of the plant.


The new diaphragm valves from GOETZE take this physical behaviour into account in their design. A stainless steel pressure sleeve integrated into the actuator acts as a mechanical compensating element and ensures constant compression of the diaphragm. This eliminates the need for retightening after the first steam sterilisation, which is otherwise often necessary.


The combination of a suitable diaphragm and a relevant Actuator provides a lasting solution to the leakage problem without necessarily having to replace the entire valve.
